How Much Should a Small Business Spend on Marketing?
Most business owners set a marketing budget by guessing, copying a competitor or spending whatever is left over. That’s how money disappears without bringing in customers.
There’s a better way. This guide gives you two simple methods to set your budget, typical costs for each channel in Jacksonville, and a worked example you can copy.
Method 1: Percentage of revenue
The simplest starting point is to spend a set share of your revenue on marketing. The U.S. Small Business Administration has long suggested about 7–8% of gross revenue for small businesses with healthy profit margins.
Use this as a range, not a rule:
| Your situation | Typical share of revenue |
| Established business, steady referrals, maintaining position | 3–5% |
| Established business that wants steady growth | 6–9% |
| New business, new location or entering a competitive market | 10–15% or more for the first year |
A business earning $800,000 a year that wants steady growth would budget around $4,000–$6,000 a month.
The weakness of this method: it tells you how much to spend, but not whether that spend will produce enough customers.
Method 2: Work backward from the customers you need
This method ties your budget directly to results. You need four numbers:
- Revenue goal. How much new revenue do you want each month from marketing?
- Average customer value. What is a typical sale, or a customer’s value over a year?
- Close rate. Out of 10 leads, how many become customers?
- Cost per lead. What does a lead typically cost in your industry? Your agency or past ad data can tell you.
Worked example: a Jacksonville HVAC company
- Goal: $30,000 in new monthly revenue
- Average job: $1,500, so it needs 20 new customers
- Closes 1 in 3 leads, so it needs 60 leads
- Cost per lead from ads and SEO: about $60–$90
- Marketing budget: about $3,600–$5,400 a month
If that number feels too high, there are three ways to improve it without cutting results: raise your close rate with faster follow-up, raise your average job value, or lower your cost per lead by improving your website and offer.
What marketing costs in Jacksonville
These are typical monthly ranges for small and mid-sized businesses. Your cost depends on your industry, competition and goals.
| Service | Typical cost | Time to results |
| Local SEO | [$1000–$2500/month] | 3–6 months |
| Google Ads management | [$500–$2000/month] plus ad spend | 1–2 weeks |
| Google Ads spend (minimum to test) | [$900–$2500/month] | 1–2 weeks |
| Social media management | [$500–$2000/month] | 2–3 months |
| Social media ad spends | [$900–$3500/month] | 2–4 weeks |
| New website | [$1500–$3500 one time] | Supports every channel |
| Full lead generation program | [$2500–$3500/month] plus ad spend | 1–3 months |
How to split your budget
A common starting split for a local service business:
- 40–50% on channels that bring leads now (Google Ads, Local Services Ads)
- 25–35% on channels that lower lead cost over time (SEO, content, Google Business Profile)
- 10–20% on social media and retargeting
- 5–10% on tracking, testing and tools
As SEO starts bringing leads, move money from ads into growth or keep it as profit.
Five budget mistakes to avoid
- Spreading a small budget across every channel. Do two channels well before adding a third.
- Stopping SEO after 60 days. SEO usually needs 3–6 months to show real results.
- Paying for clicks without tracking calls. If you can’t see cost per lead, you can’t manage the budget.
- Sending ad traffic to your homepage. Dedicated landing pages usually convert better.
- Judging marketing by rankings or likes. Judge it by leads, booked jobs and revenue.
A quick budget checklist
- I know my average customer value.
- I know my close rate.
- I know how many new customers I need each month.
- Every call and form is tracked to its source.
- I review cost per lead every month.
