How Much Does SEO Cost for a Small Business?
The most common price for professional SEO is \$500–\$1,000 a month, and most providers charge \$2,000 a month or less. Prices vary widely because SEO isn’t one product: a $300 package and a $3,000 package include very different amounts of work.
This guide shows what agencies actually charge, based on two industry surveys, what you get at each price level, and how to set a budget that pays off.
What SEO agencies charge
SEO is sold three ways: a monthly retainer, an hourly rate or a one-time project.
| Pricing model | Most common price | What it’s used for |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | $500–$1,000 a month | Ongoing SEO: content, links, technical fixes, reporting |
| Hourly rate | $75–$100 an hour | Consulting, training, small fixes |
| One-time project | $2,501–$5,000 | Audits, website migrations, one-off cleanups |
In Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers, the most common monthly retainer was $501–$1,000. Providers focused on local clients charged an average of about $1,557 a month, compared with $3,474 for those serving clients worldwide.
SE Ranking’s survey of 260 agencies found the same most popular range, $500–$1,000 a month, with 64% of agencies charging under $1,000. Prices run higher in the U.S.: 22% of U.S. and Canadian agencies charged more than $2,000 a month.
What you get at each price level
| Monthly budget | What it usually covers | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Under $500 | Google Business Profile updates, basic on-page fixes, a ranking report | A single-location business in a low-competition niche |
| $500–$1,500 | Local SEO, technical fixes, 1–2 new or improved pages a month, citations, reviews, lead reporting | Most local small businesses |
| $1,500–$3,000 | Everything above, plus regular content, link building and several service areas | Competitive local industries, multi-location businesses |
| $3,000+ | Full content program, digital PR, ecommerce or national SEO | Regional or national brands |
What affects the price of SEO
- Competition. Ranking a personal injury lawyer takes far more work than ranking a dog groomer.
- Local vs national. Ranking in one city costs less than ranking across the country.
- Your website’s condition. A slow or poorly built site needs fixes before SEO can work.
- How much content you need. Each service and location usually needs its own page.
- Who does the work. Freelancers usually charge less than agencies, and experienced specialists charge more.
Is cheap SEO worth it?
Usually not. A very low monthly price often means automated reports, a few minor tweaks and little real work. Watch for these warning signs:
- Guaranteed first-page or #1 rankings
- No written list of what gets done each month
- Reports with rankings and traffic but no calls or leads
- Hundreds of links for a low price, which can get a site penalized
- Long contracts with no way out
How to set your SEO budget
Work backward from what a new customer is worth:
- Average customer value. What’s a typical sale, or a customer’s value over a year?
- New customers needed. How many extra customers a month would make SEO worth it?
- Payback. If a new customer is worth $2,000 and SEO costs $1,000 a month, one extra customer a month covers the cost.
Budget for at least 6 months. SEO usually shows early ranking gains in 2–3 months and stronger lead growth in 3–6 months.
SEO or Google Ads?
If you need leads this month, Google Ads is faster. SEO costs less per lead over time but takes months to build. Many small businesses use both. Read our guide: SEO vs Google Ads: which brings leads faster?
Questions to ask before you hire an SEO company
- What exactly will you do each month?
- How will you report on calls and leads, not just rankings?
- Who will work on my account?
- What happens if I want to cancel?
- Can you show results for a business like mine?
