How to Create a Marketing Strategy for Your Business
A marketing strategy is your plan for turning strangers into paying customers. It answers four questions: who you’re trying to reach, what you’re offering them, where you’ll reach them, and how you’ll know it’s working.
You don’t need a 40-page document. Most small businesses do better with a clear one-page plan they actually follow. Here’s how to build one in 7 steps.
Step 1: Set one measurable goal
Start with a business goal, not a marketing activity. “Post on Instagram more” is an activity. “Get 40 new customers a month by March” is a goal.
Good goals are specific and tied to revenue: a number of leads, booked jobs, new clients or sales, with a deadline.
Step 2: Define your ideal customer
Describe the customer you most want more of. Be specific:
- Who are they? For example, a homeowner in Jacksonville, aged 35–65, in a house built before 2005.
- What problem makes them search for you?
- What do they worry about when hiring someone like you? Usually price, reliability, speed or quality.
- Where do they look for help? Google, Facebook groups, neighbors, LinkedIn?
If you serve both homeowners and businesses, write a short profile for each.
Step 3: Know what makes you the better choice
Write one sentence that explains why a customer should pick you over the three competitors they’ll also check. Look at what competitors say on their websites and Google reviews, then find the gap.
Strong differences are concrete: same-day service, a fixed-price guarantee, a named expert, 200 five-star reviews, or specialty others don’t offer.
Step 4: Build an offer people want to act on
Your offer is the reason someone contacts you today instead of “someday.” Examples include a free inspection with a written report, a free 20-minute consultation, a starter package at a fixed price, or a seasonal discount with a deadline.
Step 5: Choose 2–3 channels
Pick channels based on where your ideal customer looks and how fast you need results:
| Channel | Best for | Speed |
| Google Ads and Local Services Ads | Buyers searching right now | Days |
| SEO and Google Business Profile | Lower-cost leads over time | 3–6 months |
| Facebook and Instagram ads | Local consumer services, visual products | Weeks |
| B2B and professional services | Weeks to months | |
| Email and referrals | Repeat and word-of-mouth business | Ongoing |
Do two channels well before adding a third. A small budget spread across six channels usually gets nothing.
Step 6: Set your budget
Decide how much you’ll invest each month and where it goes. A simple approach: work out how many customers you need, how many leads that takes, and what each lead costs. Our guide on how much a small business should spend on marketing walks through the math with an example.
Step 7: Track results and review monthly
Choose 3–5 numbers and check them every month:
- Leads (calls, forms, bookings)
- Cost per lead
- Close rate
- New customers
- Revenue from marketing
Set up call tracking and form tracking before you launch, so every lead is tied to its source. Then keep what works and cut what doesn’t.
Your one-page marketing strategy template
Copy this and fill it in:
| Section | Your answer |
| Goal (number + deadline) | |
| Ideal customer | |
| Main problem we solve | |
| Why us (one sentence) | |
| Offer | |
| Channels (2–3) | |
| Monthly budget | |
| Numbers we track | |
| Review date each month |
Common marketing strategy mistakes
- Copying big brands. Large companies can spend on awareness. Small businesses need leads.
- Targeting “everyone.” A message for everyone persuades no one.
- Changing plans every few weeks. Give each channel enough time and data before judging it.
- Measuring the wrong things. Likes and rankings matter only if they lead to calls and customers.
