Why Is My Website Not Getting Calls? 12 Fixes That Work
If your website gets visitors but the phone isn’t ringing, the problem is usually one of three things: leads are getting lost, visitors aren’t convinced, or the wrong people are visiting. The good news is that most causes can be found in an afternoon, and many can be fixed in a day.
Start with the 15-minute test below, then work through the fixes.
First: is it a traffic problem or a conversion problem?
Open Google Analytics and Google Search Console and compare the last 3 months with the same period last year.
| What you see | What it means | Start with fixes |
| Visitors dropped, calls dropped | Traffic problem | 10–12 |
| Visitors steady, calls dropped | Conversion or tracking problem | 1–9 |
| Visitors up, calls flat | Wrong visitors or weak conversion | 4–7 and 10 |
| Forms show zero for weeks | Something is probably broken | 1–2 |
The 15-minute self-test
Do this on your phone, as if you were a new customer:
- ☐ Search Google for your main service and city. Can you find yourself?
- ☐ Open your homepage. Can you tell what you do and where within 5 seconds?
- ☐ Tap your phone number. Does it start a call?
- ☐ Fill out your contact form. Did the email arrive within a few minutes?
- ☐ Book an appointment, if you offer online booking. Did it work?
- ☐ Call your own business number during work hours. Did someone answer?
If any of these failed, you’ve likely found at least part of the problem.
Fixes for lost leads
1. Test every form and booking tool
Forms break more often than most people think: after a plugin update, a hosting change or a new spam filter. Submissions can land in spam or go to an old email address. Test every form monthly, and check your spam folder.
2. Make sure every call is tracked and answered
Use a call tracking number so you can see how many calls the website brings. Then check what happens to those calls. Missed calls, full voicemail boxes and slow callbacks lose jobs that the website already won.
Fixes for visitors who don’t convert
3. Put your phone number where people look
Show it at the top of every page and make it tappable on mobile. Add a sticky call button on phones so it’s always one tap away.
4. Tell visitors exactly what to do next
Every page needs one clear action, such as “Get a Free Quote” or “Book Your Inspection.” “Contact Us” alone is weak, and five different buttons are confusing.
5. Shorten your forms
Ask only for what you need to call someone back: name, phone, email and a short message. Every extra field gives people a reason to leave.
6. Show proof near the top
Visitors want to know you’re real and good at what you do. Put Google reviews, project photos, years in business and any licenses or certifications near the top of key pages.
7. Answer the questions people have before they call
The most common ones are price, timing and service area. Even a “starting at” price or typical range helps visitors feel ready to call instead of leaving to compare.
8. Speed up your pages
Slow pages lose visitors before they see anything. Test your site with Google PageSpeed Insights and fix the biggest issues first, usually oversized images, too many plugins and slow hosting.
9. Fix the mobile experience
Most local searchers are on their phones. Check for text that’s too small, buttons too close together, pop-ups that cover the screen and forms that are hard to fill in on a phone.
Fixes for the wrong traffic or too little traffic
10. Rank for buyer searches, not just information searches
A blog post about “how air conditioners work” can bring lots of visitors who will never hire you. Make sure you have a dedicated page for each service and area, targeting searches like “AC repair in [your city].”
11. Keep your Google Business Profile active
For local businesses, the map listing often brings more calls than the website. Keep your hours, services, photos and categories current, post updates, and ask happy customers for reviews.
12. Check for a drop in Google rankings
If calls fell suddenly, check Search Console for a drop in clicks, pages that stopped being indexed, or a website change around the same date, such as a redesign, new theme or deleted pages.
When to get help
