Website Redesign Checklist: 15 Signs Your Business Needs a New Website
Your website works for you 24 hours a day, or against you. An outdated site quietly sends customers to competitors, and most business owners don’t notice until the phone slows down.
Go through this checklist and count how many signs apply to your website. At the end, you’ll know whether you need a full redesign, a few fixes, or nothing at all.
Signs your website isn’t bringing in business
1. You get visitors but few calls or form fills
If people visit but don’t contact you, the site isn’t doing its job. Common causes are a hidden phone number, a weak call to action, or a page that doesn’t answer the visitor’s main question.
2. You can’t tell where your leads come from
If you don’t know how many calls and forms come from the website each month, you can’t judge it. A modern site tracks every call, form and booking.
3. Your competitors show up on Google and you don’t
Sites that are slow, thin on content or built on old code often struggle to rank. If competitors outrank you for your main services, your website may be holding you back.
4. You have one page for all your services
Google ranks pages, not businesses. If “roof repair,” “roof replacement” and “gutter installation” all sit on one Services page, you’re missing searches for each one.
Signs the visitor experience is hurting you
5. It’s hard to use on a phone
Most local searches happen on a phone. Open your site on your own phone right now. If you have to pinch, zoom or hunt for the phone number, visitors are leaving.
6. Pages take more than 3 seconds to load
Visitors don’t wait for slow pages. Test your site free with Google PageSpeed Insights. A poor mobile score is one of the clearest signs you need work.
7. Visitors can’t tell what you do in 5 seconds
The top of your homepage should say what you do, where you do it and how to contact you. If it opens with a vague slogan, visitors have to work too hard.
8. Your navigation is confusing
Too many menu items, dead-end pages or missing services make people give up. Good navigation gets a visitor to the right page in one or two clicks.
9. Your forms are long or broken
Forms with 10 fields scare people off. Broken forms are worse: leads disappear and nobody notices. Test yours this week.
Signs the technology is out of date
10. You can’t update it yourself
If changing a phone number or adding a photo means calling a developer, your site is costing you time and money.
11. It doesn’t have a security certificate
If browsers show “Not secure” next to your address, visitors may leave before the page loads. Every site needs HTTPS.
12. It runs on an old theme or plugins that no longer get updates
Outdated software is the most common way small business sites get hacked. If your developer says “we can’t update that,” it’s time to rebuild.
Signs your brand has outgrown it
13. It looks older than your business really is
Visitors judge your business by your website. An outdated design makes a professional company look small or out of business.
14. Your services, prices or team have changed
If the site still lists services you don’t offer, old prices or staff who have left, it’s misleading customers.
15. You’re embarrassed to send people to it
If you avoid sharing your website with prospects, that’s the clearest sign of all.
Your score: what to do next
| Signs that apply | What it means | Next step |
| 0–3 | Your site is in good shape | Fix the specific issues and keep improving content |
| 4–7 | Your site is losing you leads | Fix speed, mobile and calls to action first; consider a refresh |
| 8 or more | Your site is holding your business back | Plan a full redesign |
Redesign or refresh?
A refresh updates the design, content and calls to action on your current platform. It works when the site is built well but looks dated.
A redesign rebuilds the site, often on a new platform, with new page structure and content. It’s the better choice when the site is slow, insecure, hard to update or missing pages for your services.
Before you redesign: protect your rankings
A redesign done badly can erase years of Google rankings. Before launch, make sure your designer:
- Keeps or redirects every old page URL with 301 redirects
- Carries over page titles and content that already rank
- Sets up call and form tracking before launch
- Checks Search Console for errors in the weeks after launch
